The fact of the matter is that film investing is as safe as any other sound investment as long as you manage RISK
Take for instance the real estate market that everyone thought was a sound and safe market to invest their funds into... and what happened? World wide investors lost their shirt and leaped to their death.
The key for investing in films is looking at the filmmakers proposal. Look at the introduction sheet A.K.A. Executive Summary, which is basically extracted from the Business Plan. Once the executive summary convinces you to go to the next level, review the business plan.
Check the Organization Chart and see how the production company is setup. Determine where you are within that organization. Have they fit you in as an important element they take in consideration when using your capital? Or do the filmmaker just wants your money and hope for the best?
A poor business plan or presentation will give you some insight as to how that production company or filmmaker will handle the business itself. If you see its well prepared and professional that is how they will most likely manage the company... contrary if their business proposal is poorly presented that is the most likely scenario to expect as well.
Investing in a film is making a specific, calculated, and safe investment as any other investment in the market

Investing in a film is making a specific, calculated, and safe investment as any other investment in the market
Many accredited investors agree, as evidenced by an in-flow of capital from money people investing in Eastern Europe, Latin America and Chinese markets. Companies like Millbrook Pictures, Panorama, Worldview Entertainment, and others attest to this and are currently investing.
The one catch I have notice in the markets is the films language as it appears English to be the ticket to achieving commercial viability on a global scale... the big opportunity door opener for filmmakers. So try and make your movie in English and have it sub-titled or dubbed for international markets.
So it's really about taking calculated risks, working with the investor, making sure the first couple of films or movies, documentaries, are oversold in the international markets, so you only really worry about delivery risk, and their investment is spread among various strategic market and only a small proportion performance risk is placed against the U.S., unless you are able to secure distribution there as well.
